Three things every Baker & Caterer should do in 2018

Dear Esteemed Master Bakers & Caterer,

Before we take down those holiday lights and decorations, it’s a good time to look back and look forward. 2017 was another exciting yet challenging year. The business climate was something else, all the same, we endured. But while we look back, it is more important to look forward to a bright new year 2018.
Like other years before it, year 2018 would come with both challenges and opportunities, and some businesses would focus on challenges, while some others would grab opportunities.  While the past would contribute to the future, it would not totally determine it. The key to success depends on the business decisions we make and how prompt we are in making them.

To succeed in 2018, every Baker or Caterer needs three things;

1. Knowledge, Information & News
A knowledgeable and informed baker is a better baker. This is because, knowledge and information is the most important ingredient in baking. Bread and cake are different from packaged water or juice, because it takes a lot of chemistry to bake a perfect loaf. To succeed in this industry requires knowledge and information. It requires both professional and technical knowhow, as well as news on what is happening in the industry. Spend all the time on the table, also spare time to get the latest industry news. It would be worth it to dedicate time to knowing a lot more about our industry. And it is easy too, news is free, just a click on mobile phone, you get all the latest news.

2. Great Brand
An average baker spends more than  seventy percent of his time at the bakery to turn out beautiful loaves and cakes. No doubt, operations is the heart of the bakery business. However, to succeed in the baking business, we need to look beyond baking, instead of baking bread, it's better to focus on building brand. A baker is like a writer, no matter how good you are as a writer, you can never be a best writer, rather you can become a best seller. Therefore in 2018, focus on 'bread 2 brand' strategy, build great brands. Create more bread labels and varieties, alongside sizes. Surprisingly, it's not so hard, you can use the same dough for different bread brands.

3.Community
The saying that 'no man is an island' is absolutely true, because in life, we need one another to lean on. Virtually, all professionals have communities; doctors have their medical unions or associations, lawyers in Nigeria have NBA, there is ICAN for accountants. Bakers cannot succeed without a community. Therefore, in 2018, make out time to identity with and join a bakers' community like AMBCN. There is a lot of benefits and a lot to achieve when a cause is fought as a group. Please let's bring ourselves together and closer, let's share idea and knowledge, this is very helpful.

In all these, I would add that, the bold always win in business. Be bold, innovate and aspire!
Happy New Year!

Dangote Flour Joins the Exclusive League

In an apparent display of how its fortunes have changed in recent times, Dangote Flour Mills is set to join the exclusive league of 30 most capitalized stocks in the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
For a company and brand that only a few years back was struggling and was acquired by a foreign investor (Tiger Brands), until it was reacquired about two years ago, this is a great milestone. In the short time Alhaji Dangote reacquired the company, Africa's richest man together with his management team, has done a great job to turn the business around. The company has recorded tremendous success at many fronts. Only last year, Dangote Flour returned to profitability, its market share as well increased both in the flour, pasta and other categories in which it is competing. Joining the league of 30 most capitalized stocks in NSE is a huge achievement for the flour milling industry, and coming at a time when a lot of multinationals and conglomerates are dropping out of the league makes it more remarkable. It's a pointer to the fact that indigenous companies are making great strides in corporate Nigeria. Kudos to DFM! We at Naija Bakers' Corner rejoice with you, we wish you a greater business year in 2018

Revealed: five trends set to shape bakery in 2018

The year 2017 was a spectacular year for the baked goods industry globally, the price of wheat (the main grain for producing flour) was relatively stable and comforting, likewise other bakery ingredients. Understandably, it may not have been a great year for the Nigerian baked goods industry, considering the economic recession in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, as the year 2017 begins to wind downs, as bakers prepare for the last bumper sales for the year, expectations are high that 2018 would be a more rewarding year. These trends would shape the industry in the new year.

2016, Bumper Year For Flour Millers

The year 2016  would go down as one of the toughest years within the Nigeria business climate. With record high inflation and economic instability in every sphere of business life in Nigeria, it would have been expected that margins would thin out and corporate results not so wonderful. However, this is not the case with the Nigerian flour milling industry. Compared to the immediate previous year's results, two corporate giants in the industry; Honeywell Flour Mills Plc and Dangote Flour Mills closed the financial year 2016/17 at  record profit. As at the end of March 2017, HFMP netted N5.5bn profit,  a record 291% profit growth over the previous year. On her part, Dangote Flour Mills Plc recorded a pretax profit of about N13bn.  http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/honeywell-flour-mills-posts-n53-27bn-revenue/

Unfortunately, unlike the flour millers, there are no separately publicly quoted bakeries and catering companies in Nigeria (Leventis Foods & UTC are part of a conglomerate) to help track the performance of baked goods industry as end-users of flour. But it is hoped, the Master Bakers and Caterers also smiled to the bank like the millers.
